Australian Sailing Team Olympic Campaign Review

Project Background

The Australian Sailing Team contracted Ihi Research to carry out a review of the Tokyo Olympic Campaign in September 2021.

The report presents high level findings developed from survey feedback provided by members of the Australian Sailing Team following the Tokyo Olympics.

What we did

Two surveys were developed with input from the High Performance director. The first survey was identifiable. This survey posed similar items to three cohorts of respondents: athletes; coaches, and; management/support staff. The data from this survey was utilised in two ways. Firstly it was provided in a summarised form to the HP director for use in each athlete/crew’s debrief meetings. Secondly it was analysed to contribute to the findings in this report. Asking similar questions to three separate cohorts gives depth of data, allowing areas of agreement and disagreement across the cohorts to become evident.

The findings informed a second, anonymous survey that was completed by all team members. Unlike the identifiable survey, the respondents were not identified either by  name or role. This provided respondents with certainty of anonymity to assure them they could provide completely honest feedback.

Outcome

We began by formulating a statement of purpose for the development of the survey. The survey  assessed the perceptions of athletes, coaches, and management/support staff about preparation before and during the Olympic Sailing Campaigns in Tokyo 2021. We sought to define what is meant by preparation for the Olympic Sailing Campaign for the various stakeholders. We used both top-down and bottom-up approaches to develop the specific items.

One of our goals for the study was to triangulate the responses from the three different stakeholder groups.  To gain a more comprehensive understanding of participant perspectives, we triangulated the data in two ways. First, we triangulated the responses from the three different stakeholder groups. This allowed us to find convergence and divergence in the responses from the different stakeholder groups both collectively and for each athlete/crew and coach. Second, we triangulated the quantitative and qualitative data for individual respondents. The responses to the open-ended items enabled us to explain responses to the closed-ended items.

Find out how we can help you

We’ll work with you to find out what’s working, where investment could be put to best use or how to improve anything not going to plan. We can help you define success and set tangible, measurable goals. And we talk in real language so you can understand and engage with the findings. We engage with the community to conduct community research and consultations for private companies, trusts, government agencies, NGOs and more. But we have a special interest in research that has a purpose - to better society and teach lessons. We aim to help those we work with build capacity to enact positive change.
