What is this research about?
He aha te kaupapa o taua nei rakahau?

Understanding Policing Delivery (UPD) is an independent research programme that will help identify whether, where, and how much bias exists in the Police. The findings will help ensure Police policy and practice is fair and equitable to all.

A better understanding of whānau experiences will enable Police to address matters of equity and fairness, build legitimacy, deliver more equitable, inclusive and accessible Police services, support social cohesion and reduce harm whānau, and our communities.

Ihi Research is one of three research entities participating in the UPD. We are 1 year through a 2 year research process to identify issues of fairness and equity in Policing. As a result of our investigations in year 1 we are seeking to speak to groups of people that do not have a voice in the current data. This is an invitation to participate.

Who can participate in this research? Mā wai e whakauru?

In the second part of our research we would like to talk to people who have experience with the Police, who are not clearly represented in our data, or we need more information. We would particularly like to hear from,

  • people who have been tasered or members of their whānau about the impacts of tasering.

  • wāhine/women who have had police attend a family harm incident at their home.

  • people who have experienced mental illness/distress and have had the police respond.

  • members of the rainbow community who have been stopped, spoken to or arrested by Police.

All participants must be of or over the age of 18 and be able to provide informed consent to participate.
Whānau and close supporters are invited to attend with you and share their personal reflections on the Police interaction as well.
