AusCycling High Performance 2022 Review

Project Background

AusCycling contracted Ihi Research to understand the developing culture of AusCycling and the opportunities for optimising organisational management and ultimately cycling high performance.

What we did

Online planning sessions with key AusCycling staff determined the focus and purpose of the research.

Key internal documents were reviewed along with a comprehensive literature review of high performance sport.

Exploratory interviews were designed as open ended conversations regarding the participants, role, experiences, aspirations and perceptions of AusCycling. There were 41 online interviews.

A survey was designed and conducted post interviews.  A sense making meeting held to share analysis of the data and understand the perspectives of the high performance committee. The data across the document review, stakeholder interviews, and survey was analysed into six overarching themes for discussion.

Outcome

The report presents eight research informed recommendations to improve organisational culture in the AusCycling High Performance Programme.

The national high performance sport environment is complex,  challenging and primarily reactive to performance and results. This research is intended to provide proactive recommendations that support a positive shift in high performance organisational culture, which will in turn improve athlete experience and performance.  High performance sport centralisation is a complex activity that is influenced on multiple levels. Engaging in ongoing organisational monitoring and evaluation will provide feedback and improvement over time.

Find out how we can help you

We’ll work with you to find out what’s working, where investment could be put to best use or how to improve anything not going to plan. We can help you define success and set tangible, measurable goals. And we talk in real language so you can understand and engage with the findings. We engage with the community to conduct community research and consultations for private companies, trusts, government agencies, NGOs and more. But we have a special interest in research that has a purpose - to better society and teach lessons. We aim to help those we work with build capacity to enact positive change.
