John is the Chief Executive of Ihi Research. He brings extensive management experience, with over 25 years spent in the education sector, 16 years as a school principal.

From 2012 – 2013 he was seconded for eighteen months to lead Mau ki te Ako; the collaboration of Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu, University of Canterbury and the University of Otago to deliver culturally responsive teaching and learning professional development contract for the Ministry of Education.

In 2015, John led the implementation of Huakina Mai, a strengths-based relational intervention in schools.  Since this time he has contributed to research projects in health, work safety, education, men’s health, sport and well being.

John’s research passion lies in sport organisation and performance. In 2018 he led an investigation into a financial literacy programme for emerging pacific rugby players for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. In 2019 he led a comprehensive review of the tier two nations preparation and performance at the Rugby World Cup for World Rugby- his dream research project. This has become and ongoing piece of work that has included reviews of the 2022 Women’s Rugby World Cup and 2023 Men’s Rugby World Cup. He completed post tour reviews for Manu Samoa in 2018 and the Drua in 2022.

John and his partner Catherine, live in Waikuku and have a blended family of seven children and one mokopuna.
